As of January 1, 2024, North Carolina implemented updated onsite wastewater rules.
The last complete package update to North Carolina's onsite wastewater rules was back in 1990. Since then, the industry has evolved significantly with advances in technology, knowledge and continuous growing experience.
Did you know that 50% of the homes in North Carolina are governed by the onsite wastewater rules? The newly updated rules, commonly referred to as 15A NCAC 18E or simply 18E, are designed to incorporate technological advancements and enhance both consistency and clarity in the management of onsite wastewater systems. Although navigating these rules might seem daunting, we at Creech’s are driven by our passion for the industry and committed to ensuring that each job is performed to the highest standard of compliance.
What Has Changed? The 2024 updates address key areas:
- Inclusion of Advanced Technologies: The new rules now consider advanced technologies that were previously excluded. This includes updates to tanks, pumping systems, media filters, drain field trench technologies, and drip irrigation systems.
- Standardization of Terminology: To avoid confusion and ensure clarity, the terminology used in the rules has been updated and simplified.
- Reflecting Current Knowledge: The rules have been revised to reflect the current understanding and best practices in the industry, ensuring that they are up-to-date with the latest technological and practical advancements.
What if I Have a Permit that was Written Prior to the Rule Changes?
Septic system projects that were permitted under the previous rules, commonly called 1900, remain valid with the conditions and specifications outlined in that permit until the permit expires or the project is completed. Essentially, your project can continue under the regulations that were in effect at the time the permit was issued…unless there is a change or modification to the plan after January 1, 2024.
